That damned call
Posted by Carlo - 30/04/08 at 09:04:09 am
I do not know who she was and I do not know why she was so angry, her eyes fixed on nothing.
Another “complete candid” taken from distance. I loved her staticity, while the wind was moving her hair: I could have fired a longer exposure, but she would not have been moved in the picture

Two names in a missing note
Posted by Carlo - 29/04/08 at 08:04:33 am
Yesterday I decided to stop on the South Bank on my way home. I told myself that I had to push the gap that divides the easiness of using a 200mm lens to the joy of taking a portrait asking for it.
“No Candid Today” I thought, and so when them, I stopped them and start explaining who I was and asking if I could have took their picture.
I noted her names in a little piece of paper, but that piece of paper has been lost. I hope they will contact me, so this one will not be remembered as a nameless photo.
I have to thank them because they have been extremely kind to me (and they are two spectacular subjects I may add)!
When I gave them my moo card, he was immediatly jovial and trustworthy. For how she felt at ease near him, she waited for his evaluation. She was not so sure to be in my photos, but as you can see, she fits perfectly!
When i asked them “how they would have liked to be photographed” there have been a moment of silence. their eyes met and for sure a common thought hit them ate the same time. Few moments after this shot, they started laughing. I loved this moment, I loved their expressions and that feeling that only two close friends or lovers can share.
Post processing this photo I was tempted to avoid publishing it. Despite the great moment, the photo was technically imperfect. They were slightly moving, the background was full of highlights and the building on the left was nothing more than a noise. Nevertheless their expressions, was terrific. They were setting up for the first “posed” shot, and she was not perfectly at ease, but this initial laughter set everything up.
With an imperfect shot, an imperfect and burned postproduction was the only thing I could have done.

Different Cultures, Same Lips
Posted by Carlo - 28/04/08 at 09:04:22 am
They were in the middle of Oxford Circus, as they were missing from a lifetime. They were kissing like it was their first and last kiss.
There could have been no one around or the entire globe, but they were kissing, and that was whe important thing for them. There were London around, but nothing between their lips.

Stumbling upon Bill Nighy
Posted by Carlo - 26/04/08 at 09:04:37 pmToday we were wandering in Notting Hill, when we stumbled upon Bill Nighty.
I was trying to find something interesting to shoot, and I did not immediately realise who the man walking towards me was. When he saw the camera he came to me and he told me that if I wanted a photo I should have just asked. So I did. He smiled and told me “of course“.
He let me take some photos of him and Fabiana and then he shook my hand.
Well… the first actor we have met in London in two years!

The Depths of His Eyes
Posted by Carlo - 26/04/08 at 04:04:32 pm
Ram and I met via Twitter. It was by chance that we ended up meeting in Woking, while both of us live in London.
Ram has two deep and inquisitive eyes, that towered me from his height.

Photojournalism
Posted by Carlo - 24/04/08 at 03:04:59 pmToday I found myself crossing the teachers’ walkout in the streets of London. I was going to take the tube to get home from the Open Coffee when I start seeing it. When I realised what was going on, I become excited and grabbed my camera.
There were thousands of teachers walking towards the Houses of Parliament, protesting, singing their requests and waving their cartels.
During those few minutes I was trying to take the soul of that demonstration, I understood that I like photography more than I was ready to admit. Unfortunately my small compact flash cards ended up too soon.
I think that in the next months I will try to find a Photojournalism Workshop, or I will try to find a photojournalist to help me improving my skills.

My new I/O device!
Posted by Carlo - 23/04/08 at 10:04:02 pmIn these days there is a tool I would like to build, seriously. I am trying to understand if what I think is doable and if it would be of any interest apart from me.
I was thinking of a sort of “clip” to be applied on the hands (theoretically between the thumbs and the forefingers) in order to track the movement of the hands and of the fingers. For the movement of the hands the issue is not this big, an accelerometer is enough. The problems could come up when thinking of the finger movement. My idea is that it should be possible to “sense” the movement of the muscles on the back of the hands.
However… I feel that there is no technological barrier for it. Now the few of you still reading this could ask themselves: what are you talking about?
I am talking about a next generation input device, capable of replacing keyboards and mouse. It would allow everyone to use a “virtual keyboard” without being limited by a physical object. It would also be the next step in a multipoint cursor (like Tom Cruise in Minority Report).
I am pretty sure that this would be quite early in the adoption curve, but this would also mean being able to change the things…
…where can I go to understand the technology limitations? I am not interested in the gloves ’80s style, I am interested in what’s next!
Do I really have to call the psychiatrist?

My first photographic project
Posted by Carlo - 23/04/08 at 09:04:24 pm
And here I am, just watching one of my photos in another blog, after applying for my first photographic project.
Following projects is important (or so everyone feels) and helps you giving perspective upon your works (or so I feel). Then I submitted my photos “an alternative perspective of Love” into Neil Creek’s blog.
I have to admit that the more I look at my photo, the more I feel that there is so much more I have to do. There is a start and no one born capable of doing it. At least I did not. I will follow my first project with interest, looking forward for my second and third.
PS: Being ina photographic project means trying to get better, so any critique, any comment will be very appreciated… what does not kill you makes you stronger, doesn’t it?
