A strong Londoner accent?

Today, speaking with a man, I was told that I have a strange accent, because some of my words have a strong Londoner accent. I was quite surprised from in hearing this, but I can’t deny that I felt myself quite… proud.
LondonerI have always been very chameleonic with my accent. If I go in Rome, after some days I spoke like the Roman do, if I go in Naples I get some “napoletano” too… I’ve always been able to get different accents, but I am suprise to be able to do it also in a language that is not my mother tongue. (Do you think that asking [uo'?] instead of What? has some influence on it? :D )
Five years ago, while I was working for Wartsila (a Finnish corporation) I had a meeting in London, where another man asked me if I were Swedish or Norwegian. I asked him if I were tall (no), with blonde hair (no), pale eyes (no) and with a cold demeanor (no) [Sorry for the generalization, nordic guys!]. He answered me that I didn’t have none of those characteristic, but that my accent was clearly nordic. Well, I laughed about it, because working in Finland had left some nordic-english accent.
I know there’s nothing to be proud of, but I like the idea that my spoken English does not suffer of an Italian accent is quite good. My written English is not as good as I would it to be, but I’m doing my small steps.
Communication is very important and I think that being able to communicate effectively at every level is the best presentation card you can give about yourself.
Continuous Improvement Process, as always!

Bhe… parlano uguale o quasi.

ciao

Ops… Another mistake, reading this post I replied in Italian but you written it in English… I’m sorry.

I’ll try o translate: And NOW, coming back to the main argument, tell us something about your London Life. If you are speaking as a Londoner this means you’re integrating with the other Britons !

Ehh!! My pizza English is growing !!!!

Zuzu, I can’t deny that speaking from a podium is never a great things, but I have done it too, and probably the anger of things that don’t work re blinding more and more people.
Just try to maintain the issue on a civil speaking: shouting back is never a good issue in order to achieve positive results.

As for the London life… well I think we are still integrating, day by day, but now we are Londoners. There are many things that show me that we are actively part of the city, of its use and rules. We are living our life better, even if in these periods we are incredibly busy. Maybe TOO busy! Unfortunately we are leaving behind some “italian connections“, because we do not have enough time: I’m really sad about this, but a new adjustment time is coming… we are looking for a new house, working long hours because of tight deadlines and so on, so the spare time is really really short.

Have a Nice Week.

Nice week to you too!

One new question (or argument): tell us about prices of the houses, council tax, quality of the furnitures and so on… I’m curious. Are you searching in the center or outside London? Are you buying or renting?

Hi Zuzu,
well… good questions indeed. (the next post will be on that too)
Let’s say that the house prices in London are extremely high.
A house to rent can start from 700£ a month (the one we live in is a “one bedroom” and that is the cost) and does not have an upper cap; if you have a lot of money you can find houses in the heart of London for 2000£ a WEEK.
Let’s say that the average price can be around 700-900 for a single bedroom, 900-1500 for a two bedroom and 1200-2000 for a three bedroom medium. Of course it depends by WHERE you are looking. London is big and the prices goes down going a little outside (with some exception).
Being in the center is expensive, but you have everything nearer; of course some central zones does not have a lot of “Green Ares” around.
In the next months we will have to move, so we are looking around, trying to understand which are the best zones to live in, trying to find a good compromise between cost and quality.
The furnitures can vary a lot too. Our house is “Made in IKEA”, but I have to say that it is quite good, and it have everything we need. A lot of houses (or flat) to rent have IKEA furniture, but sometimes you can be lucky enough to have some good pieces. The appliances (washing machine etc etc) are quite good, but of course everything depends on your landlord. I have seen good and bad houses here like everywhere else. In Trieste, quite few years ago, I was shocked by the prices of some crappy flats… here I know that the prices will always be very high, but the quality is pretty good (of course it depends on what you are searching for).
We are now trying to get a small house, not a flat, but we will get whatever we will find suitable and affordable.
The council tax vary on the house value (or the zone) and its cost is around 1100£ per year. It includes garbage collection, street cleaning, Police, Fire Dept and so on. It is one of the two taxes you have for the house (the other is the broadcasting tax for the television, like in Italy). It is entirely on the “shoulder” of the people that lives in the house, it is not meant to be payed by the landlord.
We are looking to rent a flat, because we don’t have enough money to afford buying one right now; for that it will take some years to have a good amount of money to invest in a house, meanwhile we will pay a rent :P

Cheers
