Apple on x86!!!!!

It’s the End of the World as we Know It (and I feel fine)!

steve jobs announced yesterday that Apple will migrate from the “Big Blue” PowerPC processor to the Intel based x86!
This revolution imply a large number of changes to the world of computers, opening doors closed since the born of Macintosh; but let me explore some of those things for a while.
Six months ago I’ve bought a new laptop, an IBM Thinkpad t42p. My decision was for the Big Blue because I needed to work on Microsoft whit a real good laptop. Since 1998 I’ve left Apple, that has remained in my heart, but because of my job (VB/ASP/ASPX/C# developer) I’ve never been able to work outside the Microsoft world, even if the PowerBook has always been my dream! Yes, Thinkpad was the second-best, even if beloved. For months I’ve searched through internet some possibilities to work on an Apple hardware with Windows, but the only solution (Virtual Machines) was not enough.
But now everything has changed!
Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller, during the WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference), has told the press that they will NOT do anything to preclude Microsoft Windows to run on their new Intel based Hardware!
What does it mean? It mean that, from 2007, we will be able to put our hated Windows on our beloved Apple hardware!
I think that Apple pc are the best choice for design, durability and stability, so in the future we (Windows users) will have the possibility to choose another hardware vendor, even if this “another” is not a newbie: it’s Apple!

Yes, for those who wants to know, I’m excited to this idea: a PowerBook with some sort of Centrino with a dual boot, Mac & Win!

And for the series “..What if…” I can immagine that a good number of people, attracted by Apple design but repulsed by the different operating system, should be able to have a new hardware with both the systems and the Mac OS X (or the XI) will spread its wings to cover the potential buyer that are liked only to Windows. Is this possible?
Maybe, maybe not, but the point is that as R.E.M. sung It’s the End of the World as weKnow It (and I feel fine)!
