FCHouse A blog about our lives, our passions, our photos

Do you want to use VoIP? They want to listen!

This morning I read a shocking news about VoIP: The Government of the United States of America wants to promulgate a new law that will force all the VoIP software to contain a backdoor for “Security Reason“.
Now, I understand that in the name of the National Security everyone of us is a probable Terrorist, a P2P thief or something similar, but now I think that some things are clearer enough:

Go and find here some more information about CALEA, the regulation I am talking about…
Of course I have to tell you that I am a little scared about this powerful moment of USA upon the Internet Life: after the DNS scandal (It’s everyones! NOT YOUR), Bush Administration is trying to let a law that will involve NOT ONLY the Americans, but the entire world!

First of all I have to tell you that I will never accept such a decision, and a software with a backdoor will NEVER come on my computer! It’s our Freedom!

They are bothering us with all those “Security Reasons”, but in the reality they are limiting our Freedom!

Is it SO hard to believe?
Your internet connection is tapped because you can be a Terrorist… but meanwhile you can be sued for that old movie you downloaded some months ago.
Your mail could be controlled because you can be a Terrorist… but meanwhile you can see your personal information spreading the world like you have addressed the mail to: everyone@world
Your phone is intercepted because you can be a Terroris…

PLEASE, STOP!!!
You seem sick letting the world fear those Terrorists!

…we will see if America will accept another violation of their freedom

Funny thing you say what you say,

The same things ran through my mind back when the first introduced the Homeland Security Act way back in ‘02 (i think); At that time I was still attending a university & brought it up in many conversations w/fellow students & professors. No one seemed to be as concerned as I did . . . and at a university of all places, where we are practically taught that everything the government does is wrong . . .

Just waiting to see how it all pans out, especially now that VoIP is advertising more & as more people sign up to use it.

Hi Mel,
my fear is that too many people is accepting the Government decisions (independently from the country we are living in) with a “It’s Ok, they are working for us, and the laws they are creating are for our own protection”… well I’m one of those who don’t think in this way.
In the name of the “War against Terrorism” we have seen our freedom being shrinked again and again, where the terrorism is something that hits our life and lifestyle in a slight way.

Think about the DMCA, The Copyright restriction, the possibility for the Government to control your digital movements… I do not agree with these decisions (in Italy the situation is quite the same then in America…)
Someone in the FBI has told something like “We HAVE to have this law to avoid the terrorists take control over the internet!
This claim seems STUPID to me, an probably not only to me!
But, connecting my fragmented discourses alltoghether, I fear that too many people, listening to this FBI genius have thought: “Oh, Yes! He’s Right! If the terrorists are going to take control over the internet… bla bla bla bla
Ignorance! (because they Ignore the reality of the facts)
And our Government base the new laws on that part of the population that won’t understand, and that will approve their choiches because of the “Hidden Fears” that is shown us behind this laws!

Hello Franck,
I don’t agree with the “Box” you have shown us because of some reasons…
First of all it is a hardware technology: need to upgrade, need maintenance….
Then it is not a standard.
The main problem is that it can be effective only if both the caller and the receiver owns that box.
I can also say that it is not “Open Source”, so you cannot know how it works…

Think about a Open Source application (no maintenance, everyone can check the code and help the others to find backdoors or bugs).

The problem is not that I have something to hide in my phone calls (”I Love You, Fabiana, I will be at home in a minute…” or “Ok, Mum, I will get the cat food for Maja and Cagliostro and then I will come to visit you as soon as I can“), but what is making me crazy is that the Government wants to have some “Backdoors” to be able to control everything and they have no shame in telling this. We are not threated with respect any longer! Where is our privacy? They have flushed it down the toilet and they pretend us to stay with our mouth closed!

mmm… I feel like I have lost what I had to tell you…
:)

Sorry if it happened!

Bye Bye and Welcome You two in FCHOUSE!

Carlo
