Firebird: another real competitor in the RDBMS arena?

These days are quite full of technological news. From Microsoft embracing a venture with Novell, to Java becoming Open Source passing by Oracle that challenges Red Hat and Adobe that open the heart of his Scripting to Mozilla. Now it is the time of another key sector: the RDBMS Arena (aka Relational DataBase management System).

Firebird reaches version 2 Firebird has released the new, shiny, Version 2.0 of its Open Source DB. A long history, the one of Firebird, that has its roots in the Borland InterBase, but the newly released version has been completely rewritten in C++, has a faster indexing, support for 64bit, support to SQL200X standard and much more. Of course the support for multiplatform (Windows, Linux, OsX) is a pretty good feature!

Of course you shouldn’t forgive forget that it is another good Open Source project!

Even if I cannot be included in the “Supporters” of Firebird (I didn’t like it one year ago) I have to say that I will give it a try…

So, every day news, maybe it is time to get some fresh look to myself, lookimg deeper in Java, OsX, Firebird and whatever may come!

Cheers Guys

PS: Frank just pointed out that you shouldn’t FORGET. I think he is right… there’s nothing you should forgive about firebird and open source! :) Sorry!!

Hello Guido!
I had some experience with the version 1.5 and it had some good points on its side. I’ve also to admit that when I had to choose between it and SqLite, I’ve choosen the second…

Now, my spare time is not so big (ouch, I always forgot I have NO spare time) but I’d like to give it a try. (of course your posts are not so good…) But remember that not only one of your customers use it… despite everything it is InterBase, and it was quite used in the past! (unfortunately?)

Cheers

unfortunately…

it’s slow… poorly supported… and php used to be compiled without its support (every distribution)

some months ago i sow the first debian php-firebird package!

anyway… Zucchetti is using it with true/false value (a SIMPLE flag!) stored into varchar(250) columns… (and no indexes at all!) why do they not go to work in mine instead of coding that crap?

see ya

AHRGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel sick! I feel REALLY SICK! Is anyone thinking that even if you don;t need something “fast” you should AT LEAST use something reliable and functional?!?!?

Well, this is not a real problem of Firebird (despite being scary)

I have never tried PHP with it, but my experience with .Net and C# weren’t that bad: the connector for ADO.Net is quite good and fast. Obviously, as I have always said, there is no perfect database, there are requirements and fulfilments to them.

My min is actually floating in other fields (wait for my next post), but I don’t want to judge it before swearing a little bit on it!
One of the things I remember is the parallel I made betweek Firebird and Access… and that was scary enough! :)
