Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Yesterday Fabiana and I, joined by Cristiano and Melinda, went to the cinema to watch the new Indiana Jones. The taste in my mouth, after the end of the credits on the big screen, is bittersweet. Some parts of this film are amongst the best I have ever seen in a Lucas film, some others are worst than the ’80s James Bond.

The first half hour is brilliant (apart from one scene). Interesting setting, interesting initial development and so on. I have enjoyed the beginning of the film as rarely I have done. The photography is one of the best part of the film. Then Indiana Jones start becoming a little bit too much pretentious. I do not want to spoil part of it, but I think that some scene could have been cut completely! People imitating Tarzan, endless safe falling from huge falls… too much. Yes, also in the first three film we saw impossible things happen (using a raft boat as parachute and so on) but the general feeling is that for the love of the special effects Lucas has broken the magic.

Mind me, remove five, maybe ten minutes of the film and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is very good. Replace those minutes with some minutes of explanations and it would have been fantastic.

Again, mixed feelings, mixed result… not a film I will carry in my heart for long to be honest. Harrison Ford has been acceptable, even if he cannot hide his age, he is still Indy.

I actually read some replies to the movie on RottenTomatoes yesterday and I think someone put it quite nicely: Indy4 is like welcoming an old friend back… he’s not what you remembered and got a bit old, but it’s still a hell of a good thing to see him back.
