London temperature: up and down

When I wake un in the morning my thermometer shows me the external temperature, which in these days is around 12-14 degrees at 7 o’clock.

I already know that here you should dress yourself like an onion: layer on layer on layer…

Thermometer

So I “jump” out of bed (ok, jump is not a great word… I should say I “roll” out of bed) and I get out!

First stop: “New Cross Underground Station“. Ok, the East London Line, the one that passes through New Cross is not really “under ground” and it is not so crowded. The temperature goes up a little bit once on the train. (around 16-18 degrees)

Second stop: “Canada Water Underground Station“. Yes, this is the Jubilee line, really underground, really crowded! The temperature rise immediately, most depending on how much crowdy the Jubilee is (20-22 degrees if not crowded, 24-26 otherwise) You have to think that this is the average temp in the train, but every time the train stops and the doors are opened fresh (?cold?) air comes in for some seconds.
…And then?

Third Stop: “Westminster Underground Station - Jubilee“. This station is quite big, connects three underground lines to the national rail services and my path to the Northern Line is quite a long walk. In the station, once out of the train, the temperature drops quite fast.

Fourth Stop: “Westminster Underground Station - Northern“. some minutes of walk, un the stairs, down the stairs, on a long moving walkway and so on. it can be cold… it can be warm… it can be unbelievably hot! It mean you can freeze… you can be fine… you can sweat! With such a possible range of temperatures the result could be so different that I let you immagine the people reactions… half naked or completely covered with scarf, gloves and cap! Of course once in the Northern Line train the temperature rise up (the Northern is quite crowdy)

Fifth Stop: “Tottenham Court Road Underground Station“. Here you go! Finally I get out of the underground. In 35-40 minutes of travel I get used to the 20-26 degrees ususally available inside the underground, then I came out and… 14 degrees again!

OUCH!

Then you have to count that here the clouds move VERY FASTLY! It means that in a minute you can have a beautiful and hot sun on you, with something like 28 degrees, and few minutes later, with the help of some chilly wind, you can find yourself in a cloudy weather with 20 degrees.

Up and down and Up and down and Up and down and Up and down and Up and down and Up and down and …

…now, after this… want you really ask me why my throat burns and why my voice resembes one of a Troll?

:)

one of my colleagues told me: “Oh, don’t worry… everyone who comes here suffers some illness on the first month on the underground, but don’t worry, in few weeks you will immunize yourself to the underground!”

Cheers Mates!
