Microsoft unveils new Windows: Vista!
Previously known as Microsoft Longhorn, the long expected new Windows is coming in 2006, after more than one delay!

Well, after the “Centrino” (that in italian means centerpiece), another product comes with an italian word (not only italian… I know) and will be the new Microsoft Operating system that will be called Vista (that means the same things in both italian and english).
So, what will we find in the new operating system?
I can’t tell you for sure, because in those months Microsoft tell a hundreds times hundreds different things.
On his website (link in the image) microsoft use few words for it, announcing the release of the Beta 1 (for the subscribers) for august of this year, but the features of the formerly know Windows code name Longhorn are still to be defined completely. By the way, the final release is expected for the END of 2006, so a lot of things can change until its spreads through the world.
Windows is still the main OS used for the desktop environment (Linux is still to fragmented in too many distro and I’m waiting for the news about the intel Mac OS), but Mr. Gates (call him the devil or not) since now has won the run for the title. Will he win again with Windows Vista?
I’ve read some comments about the name the Big of Redmond has decided for his new baby, and I have to tell that I do not dislike it, but I cannot deny that the comparison with the MacOS X names (Tiger, Panther, …) does not let Microsoft wins.
Others say that the name should change, because there are other applications with that name and other comapnies that owns the vista.everything websites. Well, personally I don’t think that Bill will be stopped by some copyrights… Only the poor idiots like me must be careful with the copyright… He IS the copyright!
Following other rumors, I can tell you (but it is not sure) that the Windows Update will be available to Original copies only, but I do belive that it will be the same as the Windows XP activation, cracked after few days… Other rumors I’ve read say that the price of the OS will be lower than normal, but that the security updates will be available only for paying customers… but this rumor semms to be too stupid. If I buy something I pretend that what I’ve bought is functionally and I can’t think of paying for getting some patches! It would be like buying a car and paying for a lock replacement because everyone can open it for a manufacture deficiency!!! No No… Impossible even for Microsoft (this is a Hope!)

Returning to the features, what I know is that microsoft has created Aero, a new completely re-designed user interface. Obviously Microsoft is trying to get the customers that love the Look ‘n’ Feel of your working space. It seems it will be more aesthetically pleasing than previous Windows interfaces!
Search Engine will be brand new: fastest search ever through your files and folders with the capability of saving a search result as Virtual Search Folder. It seems that those features will be very useful, but I don’t get all that has been said as gold!
Metro will be a new format for the documents, completely based on XML. So, is Microsoft trying to steal the Adobe’s PDF capability for the users? Microsoft says NO, but even if this would have been true, I don’t care! Have you ever tried to save a Word document in XML and tried to open it viewing the code? It’s full of unreadable customization… Microsoft, since the beginning, has tried to dictate the standards, and when the standards were different, they created a new one. Usually their way of working is not only “Closed Source”, but it’s very hard to find an interoperability between the work done with Windows and its applications and other OS or programs. Of course this is very clear: why should they do it if they try to get the biggest slice of the market? If you use Windows you should continue using it or the new version, so the money will flood in the same place! Easy thinking! :(
It seems that the DRM (Digital Right Managements) hard part will not be implemented (fortunately?) and that the new OS will not be able to block your works if it doesn’t find something like a Copyright allowance. I really do not know what to think about it, because I fear that if it would be like all the other microsoft stuff, in the beginning it will cause more problems than benefits!
Monad (here in Trieste every one will laugh on the name, because it means the female genital apparatus) will be the replacement for the old CMD (command line). It has been told that it will try to mix the old command line and the Unix style, with “something” for the object oriented pragramming languages… Uhm… I’ll belive when I will see! :)
The new File System (WinFS) will be left out for some future releases.
For now there are no screenshot available, but I will post some when I will get!
Bye!
