Science Fiction, Future or Present?
Some years ago, 8 for the precision, I stayed one night without sleeping for the first “Download Session” in my entire life, downloading to the incredible speed of 3 kbyte per second! Yes, at that time I was equipped with a superb Apple Powerbook 190 cs and my internet connection was a 56k. The phone wire was long enough to connect the line directly on my desk, even if the power line tried to leave me without batteries due to sudden current change.
With a good friend of the old times, two bottles of vodka and a great desire to touch the outer world with our own hands, we lived wired from 20:00 in the afternoon to the 9:30 in the morning, talking and joking while the network was opening to us a new world.
Webcam, super fast connections, T1 and lot of the “Tech junkies” that are present realities were only Future in 1997. More things were real science fiction, not only future, at least in our minds.
Now we are running in the hand of the future, working to transform the “Science Fiction” into reality, not today, but probably tomorrow.
I’ve read a news that reports of some advancement into the Star Treck Replicator Technologies and I have to admit that I was smiling while reading the news. Sooner or later we will be wired 24/7, wherever we will be, becoming a Master of our own technological domains, like in the reigns in the middle ages.
Even if this revolution will come piece by piece we have already started the run, maybe next year I’ll get in touch with my friends, that live half a world away, without the need of a webcam, but in a Virtual Reality similar to the one seen in Nirvana or in The Lawnmower Man.
Cyberpunk is coming and will reshape the world of those who belive in the future, who think that Science Fiction is only a preview, you have only to wait a little bit and all those things will became real things.
Yeah, I’m definitively a Tech Junkie, but I am a believer!
