Sin City
Some architectural elements are, in my opinion, the perfect way of enhancing a portrait. Some locations are so interesting in the contrast with the human nature that enhance it. The lift in the building of the photographic studio is one o those. Very industrial, almost rusty. I saw it few weeks ago and for this session I asked the permission to use it: it created such a good contrast.
Inside the studio the powerful lights and the backdrop, in the lift just a small old Nikon flash: two sides of lighting your subject, both interesting, both successful. Matter of personal opinion of course.
In the last months I have tried powerful studio lights and small flashes, huge tripods to be carefully moved around, with large softboxes or lightweight stands with a small umbrella attached to them. The change is in the perspective the photographer has and in the limitation that one setup or the other can have, but in the end the most important thing is how you use your brain, how you are able to apply the same rule to different power settings. For this setup I simply fired the flash through a white umbrella, closing the large lift door to avoid the light spilling on the camera. I wanted to have the inside of the lift evenly lit, and I succeeded. The only thing I am not 100% happy with is the movement of our model, I wanted it to be more “rush”, but I am not complaining about the result, I still like this image!
