Software Patentability? No, Thanks! (Europe’s Wail)
Europe is still searching its identity in the world, it’s like a baby who’s deciding “What will he do when he will grew old”.
Politicians are debating on thousands of ideas, of “Laws that can be” and a sort of European Constitution (here you can find it in Italian, English or in Other Languages) seems to be more real than idealistic, even if the high nationalism of some countries pretend to be the main part of it, even if the change of the national politic require a change of points of view every time a government switch from Democrats to Republicans.
Despite all this problems, the “European Union” is now a reality, something that exists not only in the brighten minds of some ideologicals people. It is some sort of “Nation that should be”, even if it is not yet. Someone is afraid to loose his roots, thinking that “Italians are not like us” or “French are different from us” or anything like this, but in the end I know that my roots will never be forget, even if my nation will became “Europe” instead of “Italy”. I will be happy to hear this change, even if I know that this is more Science Fiction than a possible scenario.
Nevertheless the wail of a baby always pass between the real needs and the caprices, the good and the evil, right and wrong, and with the Software Patentability Europe is really fighting against two different points of view. Right or Wrong? Well, I have my personal toughts, but there is no Evil in that choice, there are ideas.
I think that Sotware Patent are not good because will tie down the small development companies, leaving the corporation rule again with their money, with their power. It will cause more problems to Open Source, it will be not used for teh whole Human Development, it will be used for Personal Power.
I cannot use Linux for my job right now, but I am trying to untie myself from a specific platform, because I like to embrace the Open Source Community. What will be their end in case EU will approve that law? Probably nothing disastrous, but freedom, another time, will be in the hand of few rich people.
But, more than this, I’m thinking something different: is life to be lived as a continuous race against all the other, or should we take each other had by hand helping ourselves? This law is telling me that first of all the “Powerful” must be able to make tons of money, and if some times will remain, they should think about “UBUNTU” (humanity to others).
