Strobes

Strobes

Working with hotshoe flashes is fun. Lately I am trying to use them as much as I can. There is no difference in using a small strobe instead of a big studio head, apart from power and portability of course. In full daylight a Canon, Nikon or Vivitar will not be powerful enough to overpower the sun, but bringing them around is easy. Obviously every time I talk about using small hotshoe flashes I never mean using them ON camera: move them out, create three dimensions, illuminate your subject in order to give him or her a better light: if you use your flash mounted on your camera I can assure you that your portrait will not be very interesting at all!
In this case we were standing in the shadows casted by an old and blackened house. The sun was still strong and I decided to use a simple reflector to illuminate the model’s face. I positioned the flash behind her, directed towards the wall, trying to create a separation between her figure and the wall.
