Tribe8
Long long time ago I started reading this Game, and immediately it seemed me very good indeed.
Dream Pod 9 has always attracted my attention for their Silhouette System, very simple, dynamic and flexible, far from the illogical rules of the d20 (IMHO)
What worried me the first time I read the manual was that they decided an upgrade to their game system, but they didn’t release a new version of the game. From a certain point of view this is a logical thing, because only 50 pages on 200 are dedicated to the rules in the book, but from another side if you wanna buy the game you now need the first edition manual, the Silhouette System manual and the Second Edidtion Player’s Handbook.
Three manuals?
Yes, because the second edition of the game moves the settings some years after those explained in the main manual. So, DP9 decided to change the setting without changing the most important book… of course you need to buy three manuals instead of one!
Leaving these (interesting) details behind, I have to say that the root idea for Tribe8 is quite good! It is a sort of post-atomic setting where the humanity has survived divided in Seven Tribes. There is not a good explanation on “What Happened“, but the only reference is to a sort of alien or ancient form of life called Z’bri, banished from the earth long time ago, that had wiped out the humanity (quite).
The fact that the settings does not specify clearly the history is supported by the facts that the player should not know exactly what happened too, because all the memories of it has been lost. This is not a good start for a newbie master, that usually needs a good setting where everything is explained, but for those who wants to shape the story on their own this things is good! I like it, it will help me giving free space to my ideas, without players bothering me like “Hey, but the manual says that the war started in 2115 and not when you told…”
Now, after a long stop from playing something, Fabiana and I have decided to start again here in London. We started going out on Thursday nights to the Phoenix Game Club, where I plan to start a small campaign in the next few months. It’s hard to change our own behaviour, in this case the language used to play, and for this reason I will take some time to plan the small campaing and to adapt to the english way of playing before running my own campaign.
I am thinking about running the first version of the game, because it is good enough in my opinion!
