Trusted Computing, Untrusted Users!
In these days I have read some posts about the Trusted Computing, and once more I am disappointed where the computer world is going…
For those who do not know what TC or Trusted Computing is I suggest a good look to wikipedia, but to summarize in few words TC is a set of hardware and software components that will be able to “bind” the security of our computer, making our data and connection secure and protected…
or if you want to hear a different point of view from the hardware and software producers
TC is a set of hardware and software components that will grant the corporation the ability to grant or deny some operation on our PCs.
Please, don’t laugh, even if this sentence seems Science Fiction: sadly it is not.
Today I have read some hilarious words from an IBM man, who tried to explain why one of the chips of the TC is good for us…
-The “Fritz Chip”- he said -will be able to generate a secure key that will be used to crypt the data on the computer, giving the user a complete security over its data, because no one will be able to read them!
Ok, Thank you Very Much. Why doesn’t anyone propose him, or the Brilliant Brains who worked on this, for the Nobel for Deficiency? (Deficiency: The quality or condition of being deficient; incompleteness or inadequacy.)
First of all there are a LOT of methods in which you can store in a secure your data in your PC, all of them not so invasive as a Chip soldered on a motherboard. Think about some Smart Cards that works EXACTLY as the Fritz Chip… but without being soldered there!!!
In ten years in the computer world I cannot count all the time I had to remove my hard disk from my PC to save my data. Immagine if your motherboard will burn. Only a little bit, just enough not to be able to boot. What will you do with all of your data?
Technically they are on your hard disk, that is not soldered on the motherboard, the problem is that the data contained in that HD must be “validated” from the Fritz Chip. Technically the ONLY Fritz that can certify that those data are YOUR data is the one soldered on the dead motherboard.

Can you see one of the little problems that this TERRIFIC INVENTION OF TRUSTED COMPUTING can cause?
You are the owner of the data, but if a stupid chip will not recognize you your data are valueless, because they will not be read by anyone!
In the title of this post I have written “Trusted Computing, Untrusted Users!“, because the TC group is telling a lot of GOOD things TC can do, but they are omitting some other parts, those, for example, that should tell the users that there will be no more “uncertified” MP3s, no more movies, no more FREEDOM.
Elio e le Storie Teste, an italian music group, has a Fan Site, where you can download EVERY of their song. After a cheap subscription you can download EVERY single album, video, DVD… WHATEVER! The problem will be that there will be no differece between those songs and a song downloaded from Internet. It means that once everyone will have a Trusted Computer, the corporation will be FREE, because we will not be able to do anything without their permission!
Do you believe this is correct?
Do you believe that this can be taken as a User Freedom in ANY way?
Do you REALLY think that the TC will be able to help Users?
Do you want them to gain control on every single file on YOUR PC?
A solution is growing: alternative computers, those from independent chip builder, those created from someone linked to the Open Community…
Everyone of us should rise their head, telling the Corporations (IBM, Mircosoft, Intel and ALL the other) that the Trusted Computing will NEVER BE AN ACCEPTABLE SOLUTION!
Their decision will be to loose too many users or to loose the control on US!
I am the only one who can control myself! I know what are the boundaries of the laws and those of the culture I’m living in.
I do not need a personal jackass that will block me from opening a document that it believes it is not mine.

I want my Freedom, I want to be able to take my decisions by myself, because…
I DO NOT BELIEVE IN TRUSTED COMPUTING, ALSO BECAUSE TRUSTED COMPUTING GROUP DO NOT TRUST ME!
