YO! (London Pride 2009)
Today, while in the US they are celebrating the Independence Day, in London the gay community was celebrating the day of their pride. Walking on the big streets of the capital, gay, lesbians, queers and simple normal people were having fun, remembering the whole nation that there should be no discrimination for the sexual preferences.
“Some people are Gay. Get over it” a billboard says.
I consider myself a person with a very elastic mind and I think that any form of prejudice against sexual preference is something worth of a small person. It would be like having prejudice for food preference. And please, if you want to start with any religious moralism I will gladly have a beer while you go on.
Differently from last year, today I decided to get into the path from the beginning, even without press pass. Nobody told me anything and i did not create any issue to the huge organization. I took some very interesting photos, even if I like to think that they are much more “alternative” than many I will see tomorrow in the papers. One of the things I did was to look not only to the fantastic people walking in front of the crowd, but I looked at the crowd itself, as infinite source of inspiration. In these occasions stopping in front of someone and showing the camera is much more effective than asking, and nobody says no. So I ended up in front of this girl, with her blonde hair moved by the wind and with her fancy pink stars painted around her eyes. She saw me putting my old 40D on one shoulder, bringing the 5D2 in my hands with a smile on her face, so I thought “why not?”. I stepped toward her showing her my camera and she nodded. Time to get the camera in front of my eye, focus, frame and she took her hands up with forefinger and little finger up to the sky. YO!
So while the people behind me were dancing to the notes of “You Make Me Feel (Might Real)” and “Jai Ho” (From Slumdog Millionaire) I was there looking for a different meaning of the London Pride, the one that involves the people that were there to show support to the Gay and Lesbian, the people like her, with a smile on her face!
